What Is Pilates?

Pilates is a low-impact form of exercise that focuses on strength, mobility, balance, flexibility, posture, and body awareness. Developed by Joseph Pilates in the early 1900s, the method was originally called Contrology because it emphasized mindful, controlled movement. Today, Pilates is practiced worldwide and is known for helping people move better, feel stronger, and build a deeper connection with their bodies.

At its core, Pilates strengthens the body's deep stabilizing muscles, including the core, back, hips, and pelvic floor. Rather than focusing on intensity alone, Pilates emphasizes quality movement, proper alignment, and intentional breathing to support strength from the inside out.

Who Can Benefit from Pilates?

One of the most remarkable things about Pilates is its adaptability. Pilates can be modified for a wide range of ages, fitness levels, and life stages.

Pilates may benefit:

  • Beginners and experienced exercisers alike

  • Athletes looking to improve performance and prevent injury

  • Individuals seeking better posture, balance, and mobility

  • Those wanting to build core strength and stability

  • People looking to improve flexibility and body awareness

  • Individuals interested in supporting pelvic floor health

  • Women during pregnancy and postpartum (with appropriate modifications)

  • Anyone looking for a sustainable, low-impact way to move and feel stronger

Whether your goal is to build strength, improve mobility, support your pelvic floor, enhance athletic performance, or simply move through daily life with more confidence, Pilates offers a thoughtful and effective approach to movement.
